C stands for ...

This is C1738, out at New Scotland Yard for the United Campaign Against Police Violence demonstration. When it was pointed out that he appeared to be missing a letter, he insisted he wasn't. He was unwilling to say which branch C represents. We can all have a good guess what it stands for, though.

Some bit of Ncis, or other piggery not part of Scotland Yard? Seem to recall Fit in Brighton last month with a letter, instead of all numbers...

Not all police forces have two letters on their shoulders: but this man's a Met policeman, judging by his jacket.

not all the met have two letters.

Yes: that is the point of the op - that the officer's number was C1738. Everyone knows that D stands for diplomatic; but what does C stand for?

Cunstabulary ??

Panic over. I found this.

Bishopsgate officers seem to be turning up a lot without their id numbers. Is this an unofficial policy there or is there some 'specialist' unit operating from there?

please pay attention. bishopsgate's in the city of london police district. the officer concerned is wearing a metropolitan police jacket, a metropolitan police stab vest and a metropolitan police hat. it seems fair to assume, given what he's wearing, that he is a member of, er, the metropolitan police.

Ok. So you are saying that even though he is wearing a supposed Bishopsgate number, he is in fact a Met officer, possibly with a secret designation. I am new to this, so please bear with me.

So 'C' alludes to FIT teams. This is not publicly listed in categories of the Met.
